Discover the highlights of Cusco city, the Sacred Valley, and the most renowned trekking route in the world, the Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. This comprehensive tour package includes a city tour in Cusco, a visit to the Sacred Valley, and a four-day hike along the iconic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

Highlights

  • An Extended Version of the Classic Inca Trail: This 7-day itinerary follows segments of the classic Inca Trail while also exploring additional routes that delve deeper into Inca culture and the natural wonders of the Andes. The hike passes through several lesser-known archaeological sites and offers spectacular views that only a few travelers have the opportunity to witness.
  • Sacred and Exclusive Route: The 7-Day Inca Trail is a less trafficked route, ensuring greater tranquility and a closer connection with nature and history. By following alternative and less popular trails, trekkers can explore hidden and secluded sites.
  • Diverse and Majestic Landscapes: The route traverses some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Andes, from green valleys to snow-capped peaks. Along the way, you’ll pass through various ecosystems, including cloud forests, rugged mountains, and arid zones, offering a variety of Andean flora and fauna such as llamas, alpacas, and exotic birds.
  • Challenging but Accessible: Despite being an extensive trek, the difficulty level is moderate (3 out of 5), making it accessible for those with reasonable physical fitness. The ascents and descents can be challenging, but the views and the sense of accomplishment at the end of each day are unparalleled.
  • Sun Gate and Machu Picchu as the Grand Finale: The final day of trekking culminates in Machu Picchu, arriving at the citadel through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), just like the classic Inca Trail. This entry offers an unforgettable view of the world wonder, making the effort of the previous days even more worthwhile.
  • Deep Cultural Experience: The 7-Day Inca Trail is not just a physical adventure, but also a profound cultural immersion. During the hike, you’ll have the opportunity to interact with local Quechua communities, learn about their traditional lifestyles, and participate in Andean ceremonies that are still practiced today.
  • Acclimatization and Altitude Preparation: Throughout the 7 days, the hike gradually adapts to altitude, reaching heights of up to 4,200 meters above sea level at the highest mountain passes. This route allows for progressive acclimatization, helping trekkers to avoid altitude sickness.
  • Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Route: The 7-Day Inca Trail follows strict conservation and sustainability guidelines, ensuring minimal environmental impact. The use of biodegradable products is promoted, and single-use plastics are restricted, preserving the natural surroundings for future generations.
  • Ideal Season for the 7-Day Inca Trail: The best time to undertake the 7-Day Inca Trail is during the dry season, from March to December, when rainfall is minimal and trail conditions are optimal. The rainy season (January and February) can make paths more challenging, but the vegetation is incredibly beautiful during these months.

Travel Guide

Travel Guide for the 7-Day Inca Trail

The 7-Day Inca Trail is one of the most comprehensive and demanding routes to Machu Picchu, offering a unique trekking experience. Here are some essential recommendations to ensure you are prepared for the adventure.

Weather on the 7-Day Inca Trail

Keyword: weather

The weather on the Inca Trail can vary significantly depending on the season. During the dry season, from March to December, days are sunny and warm, with temperatures up to 20°C (68°F), while nights can be cold, dropping to 0°C (32°F). During the rainy season, from January to February, rainfall is more likely, making the trail slippery and challenging. It is recommended to avoid this season due to the climatic difficulties.

Tips for a Successful Hike

Keyword: tips

  • Book in advance: Permits for the 7-Day Inca Trail are limited and sell out quickly. It is recommended to book at least 6 months in advance, especially during the high season.
  • Acclimate is key: Since you will be hiking at altitudes above 4,000 meters, it is important to spend 2-3 days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley to allow your body to adjust to the altitude and reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
  • Travel light: Although you will have porters carrying heavier equipment, it is important to bring only essentials in your daypack: water, sunscreen, waterproof gear, and energy snacks.

How to Dress for the 7-Day Inca Trail

Keyword: dress

Given that weather conditions can change rapidly in the mountains, dressing in layers is crucial:

  • Base Layer: Wear breathable, moisture-wicking clothing to keep you dry during hikes.
  • Mid Layer: Bring a wool or fleece jacket for colder areas and nights.
  • Outer Layer: A good waterproof jacket is essential to protect you from rain and wind. A windbreaker is also useful.
  • Appropriate Footwear: Waterproof trekking boots, already worn in, with good ankle support are essential for walking on rocky and slippery terrain.
  • Accessories: Bring a hat, gloves, sunglasses, and a cap to protect yourself from the sun and cold at high altitudes. It is also important to use sunscreen and insect repellent in lower areas.

Restrictions on the 7-Day Inca Trail

Keyword: restrictions

  • Limited Permits: Only a specific number of trekkers are allowed each day, so it is essential to book in advance.
  • Single-Use Plastic Ban: Carrying single-use plastics, such as bottles and plastic bags, is prohibited to protect the environment.
  • Only Designated Campsites: Camping outside designated areas by park authorities is prohibited.

Physical Preparation for the 7-Day Inca Trail

Keyword: physical preparation

The 7-day hike is demanding, so it is important to be in good physical shape. Here are some tips:

  • Cardiovascular Training: Engage in regular hiking or jogging to improve your endurance and lung capacity. The trail includes long ascents and steep descents, which can be exhausting if not well-prepared.
  • Leg Strengthening: Strengthen your legs with exercises such as squats, stair climbs, and lunges to prepare for the steep ascents of the route.
  • Trekking Practice: If possible, undertake multi-day hikes in mountainous terrain before the trip to get used to carrying a backpack and walking for long hours.

Health Recommendations

Keyword: health

  • Altitude Sickness: Since some sections of the Inca Trail reach altitudes of 4,200 meters, you may experience altitude sickness symptoms. Symptoms include headaches, nausea, and fatigue. It is recommended to carry medications like acetazolamide (Diamox) to help prevent these symptoms.
  • Constant Hydration: Altitude and physical exertion can lead to dehydration, so it is essential to drink water regularly. Bring a reusable bottle and water purification tablets.
  • Calorie-Rich Food: Bring energy-rich snacks like nuts, energy bars, and chocolates to maintain your energy levels during long hikes.
  • Sun Protection: Higher altitude increases UV exposure, so use high-factor sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for protection.
  • Medical Consultation: If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, such as heart or respiratory issues, consult your doctor before undertaking the trek.

By following these recommendations, you will be better prepared to tackle the challenges of the 7-Day Inca Trail and fully enjoy this incredible adventure through the Andes mountains.
