Escape to the lush jungles of Puerto Maldonado, Peru’s biodiversity capital, and experience a unique two-day journey into the heart of nature. From spotting playful monkeys on “Monkey Island” to navigating Lake Sandoval’s serene waters, this tour offers unforgettable moments. Perfect for nature lovers, this adventure combines wildlife exploration, delicious meals, and comfortable accommodations to create a complete Amazon experience.
Arrival and Reception: Upon arrival at the airport or bus station, guests are warmly welcomed and taken to the Monte Amazonico Lodge office for a detailed overview of the itinerary.
Transfer to the Lodge: Enjoy a scenic one-hour boat ride to the lodge, where a refreshing fruit juice awaits as a welcome drink. After a quick check-in, guests settle into their cozy rooms.
Visit to Monkey Island: After lunch, explore “Monkey Island,” located across the Madre de Dios River. This island is home to various monkey species, including brown capuchins, squirrel monkeys, saddle-back tamarins, and white capuchins. After this lively activity, return to the lodge for some relaxation.
Nighttime Caiman Expedition: At night, embark on a thrilling caiman-spotting tour along the banks of the Madre de Dios River. Flashlights are essential for this adventure. With some luck, guests might also spot a capybara, the world’s largest rodent, weighing up to 60 kilos and related to the Peruvian cuy. Afterward, return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Morning Adventure: Start the day with an early breakfast before a short boat ride to the entrance of Lake Sandoval. After passing through the checkpoint, enjoy a 3-kilometer (2-mile) hike through the rainforest to the lake, known as a habitat for piranhas and one of the largest bodies of water in the Tambopata National Reserve.
Wildlife at Lake Sandoval: Once at the lake, embark on a rowing boat tour to observe incredible wildlife. Keep an eye out for bird species like hoatzins, cormorants, jacanas, puma herons, and eagles, as well as monkey species like howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, and black capuchins. With some luck, you may also encounter a family of giant river otters, nearly two meters long and critically endangered, or spot the largest recorded caiman, which measures over 4 meters.
Return to the Lodge: After this awe-inspiring adventure, head back to the lodge to enjoy a traditional Amazonian lunch.
Departure: Conclude your journey with a return trip to the city, filled with memories of the Amazon’s incredible biodiversity.
Pack mosquito repellent, a flashlight, binoculars, sunscreen, personal items, hiking shoes, long-sleeved shirts, and long pants.
