Experience the Mystical Beauty of the Arcoiris Mountain Range

The Palcoyo 1-Day Tour is meticulously designed to explore the Arcoiris Mountain Range, a mystical locale renowned for its vibrant mountain outcrops and unique rock formations at an elevation of 4,800 meters above sea level. This Andes Adventure allows you to appreciate three of the main attractions within this circuit: Palcoyo, the Stone Forest, and Ausangate.

Palcoyo, known as the Colorful Mountain Range, features over four distinct rocky outcrops displaying unusual colors. These hues result from various sediment layers of different colors combined with minerals that date back approximately 24 million years. The Stone Forest is a remarkable rocky formation with diverse shapes, sculpted by natural erosion over thousands of years, creating natural pillars and whimsical forms atop Palcoyo. Additionally, the tour includes a visit to Ausangate, the highest snow-capped peak in Cusco at 6,380 meters above sea level. Ausangate is considered the principal Apu (Sacred Mountain) since Inca times. Witnessing all these formations together provides the perfect opportunity to admire the Andes in all their splendor.

The Palcoyo Mountain Tour invites you to explore Cusco’s hidden second rainbow mountain, known for its easy access and breathtaking landscapes. You may already know about Vinicunca, or Rainbow Mountain, also referred to as the Mountain of the Seven Colors. Located in Cusco, this natural marvel attracts more visitors each day. But did you know? A similar, equally stunning destination awaits: the Palcoyo Mountain of Seven Colors. This tour takes you into the Andes, where you’ll enjoy an unforgettable view of Mount Ausangate. Along with remarkable scenery, the Palcoyo Mountain Tour offers various engaging activities for nature and trekking enthusiasts.

During your Palcoyo Mountain experience, you’ll also encounter a stone forest that adds a mystical touch to the landscape, perfect for those passionate about nature and hiking. On the way to Checacupe, you’ll visit a colonial church featuring intricate wood carvings, gold leaf details, and remarkable Cusco-style paintings. Additionally, you’ll explore ancient Inca, Colonial, and Republican bridges, each with its own historical significance. So, are you ready to set out and experience the stunning Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain?

Recommendations for the Palcoyo 1-Day Tour

Booking in Advance
The Palcoyo tour is gaining popularity as an alternative to Vinicunca. Booking in advance, especially during the high season (May to September), ensures a spot and allows proper planning for acclimatization.

Best Time to Visit
The ideal months to visit Palcoyo are May through September, which fall in the dry season, offering clear views and pleasant weather. These months also provide the best visibility for the surrounding mountain range, including Ausangate.

Photography Tips
Palcoyo’s colors shine brightest in natural light, so plan your shots for the midday hours when the sun is highest. Bring extra battery packs for cameras and phones, as the cold can drain batteries more quickly at higher altitudes.

Weather Conditions

Dry Season (May to September)

  • Temperatures: Daytime highs range from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), with nights dropping to around 5°C (41°F).
  • Clarity: Generally clear skies, perfect for panoramic views and photography.
  • Wind: Winds can be strong in the mountains, so having a wind-resistant jacket is essential.

Wet Season (October to April)

  • Temperatures: Daytime temperatures stay mild around 18°C to 22°C (64°F to 72°F), but nights are warmer, closer to 10°C (50°F).
  • Rain: Frequent rain showers and increased humidity can create slippery trails.
  • Visibility: Mountain colors may appear muted due to cloud cover, so plan accordingly.

Tips for a Successful Tour

Altitude Preparation
Palcoyo reaches elevations up to 4,900 meters (16,076 feet), so prior altitude acclimatization is essential to avoid altitude sickness.

Pacing Yourself
The hike is moderate but does cover some steep terrain. Walk at a comfortable pace and stay hydrated. Avoid strenuous physical activity on the first day in Cusco to help acclimatize.

Hydration and Snacks
Bring water and high-energy snacks, like nuts or energy bars, to maintain energy and hydration throughout the hike.

How to Dress for Palcoyo

Layered Clothing
Mornings start chilly, and temperatures increase with the sun, so wearing layers allows for easy adjustments. Include a base layer, a light fleece, and a windproof, water-resistant jacket.

Footwear
Sturdy trekking boots with good ankle support are recommended, as the terrain can be uneven. Avoid new shoes to prevent blisters.

Sun Protection
The sun at high altitudes is intense. Wear sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen (SPF 50+) to protect against sunburn and UV exposure.

Rain Gear
Even in the dry season, mountain weather can change rapidly. Pack a rain poncho or waterproof jacket to stay dry during unexpected showers.

Restrictions for the Palcoyo Tour

Age and Health Restrictions
This tour is generally suitable for people aged 10 and above. Children and older adults should be accustomed to physical activity and, ideally, have prior experience with altitude.

Limited Services
There are few facilities along the trail, so come prepared with essentials like water, snacks, and any personal items you may need.

Physical Preparation for the Tour

Cardio Training
Moderate cardiovascular endurance will make the hike more enjoyable. Prepare with activities like walking, hiking, or cycling in the weeks leading up to your trip.

Altitude Acclimatization
Spend 1-2 days in Cusco (3,400 meters/11,155 feet) before the tour. Avoid alcohol and heavy meals during this period to allow your body to adjust.

Stretching and Mobility
Flexibility and mobility exercises, like yoga, are beneficial for handling uneven terrain and managing muscle fatigue.

Health Recommendations

Altitude Sickness Prevention
Coca tea, available in Cusco, can help relieve mild altitude symptoms. Over-the-counter medications, like acetazolamide (consult your doctor first), can also ease altitude discomfort.

Hydration
The dry, high-altitude environment increases dehydration risk. Drink water regularly throughout the day to maintain hydration and minimize altitude symptoms.

Insect Protection
Though insects are minimal at high altitudes, applying insect repellent can prevent bites from occasional flies or bugs in warmer months.

Enjoy Your Palcoyo 1-Day Tour

The Palcoyo Mountain range, with its colorful landscapes and stunning views, offers a unique and less-crowded alternative to Vinicunca. Following these recommendations and preparations will help ensure a safe and memorable adventure in the Andes. Enjoy exploring this remarkable natural treasure!
