Experience the incredible Short Inca Trail in 2 days, a combination of adventure and luxury designed for those with limited time. Covering a distance of 12 km, this hike traverses through the lush landscapes of the Urubamba Valley and diverse fauna, immersing you in ancient trails. The highlights include Chachabamba, Wiñayhuayna, Inti Punku “Sun Gate,” “The Guardian’s House” with stunning views of Machu Picchu, and the Machu Picchu Sanctuary with its captivating sunset and sunrise moments. We are a licensed local travel agency and operators in Cusco, offering daily departures, although advance booking is recommended due to the Inca Trail’s visitor limit.

Highlights

  • Short but Unforgettable Journey: The 2-day Inca Trail is perfect for travelers short on time but still eager to experience the magic of the Andes and Machu Picchu. This trek offers a condensed version of the famous 4-day trek, hitting many of the highlights without requiring the same level of physical endurance.
  • Access to the Stunning Wiñay Wayna Ruins: One of the main attractions on this shorter route is Wiñay Wayna, an impressive Inca ruin nestled in the cloud forest. The name means “Forever Young” in Quechua, and the site is known for its stunning terraced slopes and intricate stonework. This stop offers a rare chance to explore a significant archaeological site before reaching Machu Picchu.
  • Arriving at Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku): One of the most rewarding aspects of the Inca Trail 2 Days is that you arrive at Machu Picchu via the Sun Gate, or Inti Punku, the same way the ancient Incas would have entered the sacred site. As you descend into the site, you’ll be greeted by breathtaking views of Machu Picchu from above, an experience unlike arriving by bus or train.
  • Perfect Balance of Adventure and Comfort: This trek offers a manageable level of adventure, covering 10 kilometers on the first day. It’s challenging enough to give you a sense of accomplishment but not as demanding as the longer routes. After the hike, you’ll spend the night in a comfortable hotel in Aguas Calientes, allowing for rest and recuperation before exploring Machu Picchu the next day.
  • Close Interaction with Nature: Although shorter, the 2-day Inca Trail takes you through diverse landscapes, from lush forests to high mountain passes. Along the way, you’ll be surrounded by the rich biodiversity of the Andean cloud forest, where you can spot exotic orchids, vibrant birds, and other wildlife that inhabit this pristine environment.
  • Exclusive Trekking Experience with Fewer Crowds: Compared to the traditional 4-day trek, the 2-day Inca Trail sees fewer trekkers, allowing for a more intimate experience with nature and the historical sites. This also means that popular spots like Wiñay Wayna and the Sun Gate will likely be less crowded, giving you more time to soak in the atmosphere.
  • Flexibility in Scheduling: Since the 2-day trek requires less time, it’s easier to fit into your travel plans. With daily departures, it offers more flexibility compared to the longer treks that often require more logistical planning.
  • Ideal for Families and First-Time Trekkers: The moderate difficulty level makes the 2-day Inca Trail an excellent option for families with older children or people who are new to trekking. It’s a great way to get a taste of the Inca Trail without the need for extensive hiking experience or physical preparation.
  • Cultural and Historical Insights: Despite its shorter duration, the trek is rich in cultural experiences. Professional guides provide detailed explanations of the Inca civilization, their construction techniques, and the spiritual significance of the sites along the way, offering a deep understanding of the ancient Andean culture.
  • Unbeatable Views of Machu Picchu: The final highlight, of course, is Machu Picchu itself. The 2-day trek allows you to experience the grandeur of this Wonder of the World from a unique perspective. The anticipation builds as you approach Machu Picchu, and the view upon arriving at the Sun Gate is a moment of awe that few other travel experiences can match.

Travel Guide

Travel Guide for the 2-Day Inca Trail

Just like the 5-Day Salkantay Trek, the 2-Day Inca Trail requires good planning to ensure a pleasant and safe experience. Here are key tips to ensure this short but memorable journey.

Weather on the 2-Day Inca Trail

Keyword: weather

The weather in the region is similar to that experienced on the 5-Day Salkantay Trek. During the dry season, from May to September, days are sunny and pleasant, with temperatures around 20°C (68°F), but nights can be cold, with temperatures dropping below 5°C (41°F). In the rainy season, between November and March, rains are frequent, making the trail more slippery and challenging.

Tips for a Successful Hike

Keyword: tips

  • Book in Advance: Like the Classic Salkantay Trek, permits for the 2-Day Inca Trail are limited, so it’s essential to reserve your spot several months in advance.
  • Stay Hydrated: Altitude can dehydrate quickly, so it’s important to drink water constantly throughout the trek.
  • Proper Acclimatization: Similar to the 5-Day Salkantay Trekking, it is essential to acclimatize in Cusco or a nearby region to avoid altitude sickness. Spend at least two days acclimatizing before starting.

How to Dress for the 2-Day Inca Trail

Keyword: dress

Dressing in layers is key for both the Inca Trail and the Classic Salkantay Trek. Here are some clothing tips:

  • Base Layer: Wear moisture-wicking clothing to keep you dry and comfortable during the hike.
  • Mid Layer: Bring a wool or thermal jacket for the colder areas of the trail.
  • Outer Layer: A waterproof jacket is essential to protect you from rain, especially if hiking during the wet season.
  • Footwear: Like the Salkantay Trek 5 Days, it is recommended to wear sturdy trekking boots, as the terrain can be uneven and steep.
  • Accessories: A hat, gloves, and a buff or scarf will protect you from the cold winds at high altitude.

Restrictions on the 2-Day Inca Trail

Keyword: restrictions

  • Limited Permits: Only a limited number of people can access the 2-Day Inca Trail each day, so it’s essential to book in advance. This restriction is similar to the 5-Day Salkantay Trek, where permits are also strictly controlled.
  • Plastic Ban: Carrying single-use plastics, such as bottles and plastic bags, is prohibited to protect the natural environment and historical ruins.

Physical Preparation for the 2-Day Inca Trail

Keyword: physical preparation

Despite being a shorter route than the 5-Day Salkantay Trek, the 2-Day Inca Trail requires moderate physical condition. Here are some tips:

  • Endurance Training: Engage in hikes or jogging to improve your endurance. Although the route is shorter, there are still steep inclines that require physical strength.
  • Muscle Strengthening: Strengthen your legs with exercises like squats and stair climbs. This will be useful for the ascents and descents on the trail.

Health Recommendations

Keyword: health

  • Altitude Sickness: Just like on the 5-Day Salkantay Trekking, you may experience symptoms of altitude sickness. Acclimatizing before the hike is crucial, as well as carrying medication like acetazolamide if necessary.
  • Hydration and Nutrition: Stay hydrated and consume carbohydrate-rich foods to maintain your energy. The terrain can be demanding, so you will need extra calories.
  • Sun Protection: Although the trail is in a cloud forest area, altitude increases sun exposure. Don’t forget to use sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.

By following these recommendations, you will be prepared to enjoy the 2-Day Inca Trail safely, just like the Classic Salkantay Trek, an unforgettable experience in the Andes.
