Travel Guide

Travel Guide: Sacred Valley Tour

The Sacred Valley, located near Cusco, is an unmissable destination filled with stunning landscapes, historical ruins, and rich culture. To make the most of your visit, here are some recommendations on how to prepare, what to expect weather-wise, and how to take care of your health during the tour.

Climate in the Sacred Valley

Altitude and Climate The Sacred Valley is situated at a lower altitude than Cusco, between 2,800 and 3,000 meters above sea level. This makes it slightly warmer and more comfortable compared to Cusco.

Dry Season (April to October) The dry season is the best time to visit, with sunny days and cool nights. Daytime temperatures range between 20-25°C, but it is advisable to wear warm clothing as temperatures can drop to 5°C at night.

Rainy Season (November to March) During this season, temperatures are similar, but there is a higher chance of rain, especially in the afternoons. It is recommended to carry a waterproof jacket or poncho, as rainfall can be unpredictable.

How to Dress for the Sacred Valley Tour

Layered Clothing Temperatures vary throughout the day, so it is best to dress in layers. Start with a breathable base layer, add a coat or sweater, and carry a light jacket for wind or rain.

Comfortable Shoes There will be a lot of walking and exploring at archaeological sites like Pisac and Ollantaytambo. Wear comfortable shoes with good soles, as some paths may be uneven or rocky.

Hat and Sunglasses The sun can be strong, even in the coldest months, so protect yourself with a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protected sunglasses.

Tips for the Sacred Valley Tour

Stay Hydrated At high altitudes, the body loses water more quickly. Always carry a reusable water bottle and drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

Cash for Souvenirs Many local markets, especially in Pisac and Chinchero, offer beautiful crafts. Most vendors only accept cash, so bring Peruvian soles for your purchases.

Start Early Tours generally start early in the morning to take advantage of the cool weather and avoid crowds. Ideally, be ready around 7:00 AM.

Restrictions and Recommendations

Entrance Tickets Most major archaeological sites, such as Pisac, Ollantaytambo, and Chinchero, require the Tourist Ticket. Make sure to purchase it in advance to avoid inconveniences.

Cultural Respect When visiting indigenous communities or religious sites, always ask permission before taking photos. Dress modestly and respect local customs.

Altitude Restrictions If you have heart or respiratory problems, consult a doctor before traveling to high-altitude areas. Some visitors may experience altitude sickness.

Physical Preparation for the Sacred Valley Tour

Fitness Level Although most of the tour involves light walking, there are steep climbs and stairs at sites like Ollantaytambo. Being in good physical shape will help you enjoy the tour more comfortably.

Acclimatization Before starting your Sacred Valley tour, it is recommended to spend a few days in Cusco to acclimate. This will help prevent altitude sickness and allow your body to adjust to the thinner air.

Stretching Before Walking Since you will be walking a lot and climbing some hills, it’s a good idea to do some stretching before starting the day. Focus on your legs and back to avoid soreness.

Health Recommendations for the Sacred Valley

Prevention of Altitude Sickness Altitude sickness can affect anyone. To prevent symptoms like headaches and dizziness, drink coca tea, avoid alcohol, and rest during the first few days. In severe cases, you might need oxygen.

Bring a First Aid Kit Carry a small first aid kit with essentials: pain relievers, bandages, and medications for altitude sickness. It’s also useful to have sunscreen and insect repellent, as some areas can be sunny and mosquito-prone.

Watch Your Diet Peruvian cuisine is incredible, but to avoid stomach issues, make sure to eat at trusted restaurants or those recommended by your guide. Use bottled or purified water
