Also referred to as the Colorful Sharp Peak Mountain, Pallay Punchu of Apu Tacllo, Pallay Poncho Mountain, or Condor Sayana, Pallay Punchu has become one of Cusco’s latest tourist attractions discovered during the quarantine period. It is situated more than 194 kilometers and approximately three hours away from the city of Cusco, perched on a summit with an elevation of 4,791 meters above sea level. This significant geological mountain formation is imbued with a variety of colors due to a complex mixture of minerals. The slopes and the summit are highlighted with numerous hues, including red, rose, purple, green, pink, white, and others.

Highlights

  • Explore the breathtaking range of sharp peaks and geological formations shaped by time. The landscape resembles an Andean poncho—a traditional Andean garment—with vibrant pigments such as magenta, brown, and red, offering an incredible view due to the diverse soil coloration.
  • Discover less-visited areas where the ancient customs and traditions of the Quechua people are still preserved. These communities are engaged in potato cultivation and the breeding of South American camelids like llamas and alpacas.
  • Visit the expansive Layo Lagoon, where you can enjoy delicious local cuisine, including grilled trout, roasted guinea pig, and spit-roasted lamb.

Itinerary

DAY 1:

PALLAY PUNCHU TOUR

Early in the morning, we will pick you up from your hotel to begin our journey, which takes approximately two hours to reach the village of Cusipata. There, you will enjoy a nutritious breakfast before continuing the trip to Sicuani and then to the district of Layo, where Pallay Mountain is located. In Layo, there will be a brief stop to learn about the village and its customs. Following this, our group will ascend for about 30 minutes to reach the base of the mountain. Subsequently, we will embark on a hike of approximately two and a half hours to reach the sharp Pallay Punchu Mountain, whose vibrant colors are due to a complex combination of minerals, marine, lacustrine, and fluvial sediments.

Over time, these sediments formed layers of varying lengths as a result of tectonic plate collisions in the area. These mineral bands eventually rose and transformed into the mountains we admire today. The mountain acquired its colors through the oxidation of its minerals, influenced by the region’s humidity and erosion. The climate on Pallay Punchu is cold with morning winds, becoming drier and sunnier by midday. Throughout the trip, you will witness beautiful landscapes and local wildlife. Additionally, near Pallay Punchu Mountain lies the stunning Langui Lagoon, enhancing the mountain’s spectacular appearance and making it a highly attractive destination. After the visit, we will descend to have lunch at one of Layo’s local restaurants, where you can enjoy a variety of dishes based on trout and alpaca. Finally, we will return to the city of Cusco, with an approximate arrival time of 6 PM.
