Itinerary

DAY 1:

Welcome to the Jungle and Monkey Island

Upon your arrival in Puerto Maldonado, known as the Biodiversity Capital of Peru, a warm welcome awaits. After meeting at the airport or bus station, you’ll head to the Monte Amazonico Lodge office to receive important details about the adventure ahead. From there, you’ll board a boat for an hour-long journey along the Madre de Dios River, where the lush jungle surrounds you.

At the lodge, you’ll be greeted with a refreshing fruit juice made from regional fruits, the perfect way to begin your Amazon experience. Once you’ve settled into your room, lunch will be served.

In the afternoon, you’ll set out for Monkey Island, just across the river. This small paradise is home to several species of monkeys, including brown capuchins, squirrel monkeys, and tamarins. Observing their playful behavior in the wild is a true highlight.

As the sun sets, the adventure continues with a caiman spotting expedition along the riverbanks. With a flashlight in hand, you’ll search for these fascinating creatures. If luck is on your side, you might even spot a capybara, the largest rodent in the world. Afterward, you’ll return to the lodge for a hearty dinner and a peaceful night’s sleep.

After an early breakfast, your day begins with a boat ride to the entrance of Sandoval Lake, located within the Tambopata National Reserve. A 3-kilometer (2-mile) hike through the rainforest will lead you to the lake, a serene habitat known for its diverse wildlife.

Once there, you’ll board a rowboat to explore the tranquil waters. Keep an eye out for vibrant bird species such as hoatzins and herons, playful monkeys, and perhaps even a family of giant river otters. These endangered creatures can grow up to two meters long and are a rare sight. If you’re lucky, you might also see one of the lake’s massive caimans.

After returning to the lodge for lunch, the adventure doesn’t stop. As night falls, you’ll embark on a jungle night walk. The forest comes alive after dark, revealing a whole new world of nocturnal insects, amphibians, and reptiles. It’s an experience that will immerse you in the sounds and sights of the Amazon like never before. Dinner and rest await you back at the lodge.

Wake up early to a magical morning and head out to the Canopy Walkway, where you’ll experience the jungle from 30 meters (98 feet) above the ground. The treetop bridges offer breathtaking views of the rainforest and the Madre de Dios River, along with opportunities to spot birds like toucans, macaws, and orioles.

Back at the lodge, breakfast is served, and then it’s time for an adrenaline-filled zip-lining experience. Under the guidance of a professional instructor, you’ll glide through the treetops, feeling the rush of soaring high above the jungle floor.

After a delicious lunch and some relaxation, the afternoon brings more excitement. You’ll cross the Madre de Dios River by kayak, a peaceful yet thrilling way to enjoy the beauty of the Amazon. As the day ends, take part in a bit of artisanal fishing. With patience, you might catch species like catfish before heading back to the lodge for dinner and your final night in the jungle.

On your last morning, enjoy a relaxed breakfast before packing up. A boat will take you back to Puerto Maldonado, where you’ll be transferred to the airport or bus station, marking the end of this incredible Amazon adventure.
