Itinerary

DAY 1:

From Cusco to the Cloud Forest and Pilcopata

Your journey begins bright and early, with pick-up from your hotel between 5:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. A comfortable private bus takes you through scenic landscapes, with a stop at the Chullpas de Ninamarca, ancient funerary towers standing at 12,300 feet (3,750 m).

Next, you’ll visit Paucartambo, a picturesque town known for its colonial bridge and rich folklore. From there, ascend to the highlands of Acjanaco at 13,120 feet (4,000 m), the gateway to Manu National Park.

Descending into the enchanting Cloud Forest, you’ll witness vibrant orchids, heliconias, and ferns. Along the way, keep an eye out for the Cock of the Rock, Peru’s national bird, and perhaps a rare glimpse of a Spectacled Bear.

By late afternoon, you’ll reach the village of Pilcopata, at 1,804 feet (550 m). Rest and relax at a lodge equipped with private bathrooms and showers.

After a hearty breakfast, the adventure continues with a short 45-minute drive to Atalaya, passing through lush landscapes with coca plantations, fruit trees, and orchids. From Atalaya, board a motorized boat and journey along the Madre de Dios River, spotting birds like herons, kingfishers, and vultures, including the magnificent King Vulture.

With luck, you may catch a glimpse of a jaguar or white caimans lounging by the riverbanks. The journey continues past Boca Manu before arriving at Cocha Otorongo, your safari camp for the night.

After settling in, explore the lake’s observation tower, standing 98 feet (30 m) tall, offering breathtaking views. Watch for giant river otters, turtles, and a variety of bird species. Spend the night at a safari-style camp, with double beds, mosquito nets, and shared bathrooms.

Afterward, hike through virgin rainforest trails with your guide, learning about the secrets of the tropical jungle. Return to Cocha Otorongo in the afternoon, where you can opt for a night walk to experience the nocturnal wonders of the jungle. Spend another night in your safari camp.
